Are you a Type 1, 2, 3 or do you have Gestational Diabetes? Diabetes can happen at any age, to any ethnic group no matter your size or shape. Here is a brief breakdown of each type.
Type 1 Diabetes is where your pancreas is producing very little or no insulin at all and you become insulin dependent. It is considered an autoimmune disease and is more common in children, and young adults, but they are discovering that more people are getting this type later in life. It makes up about 5-10% of the population.
Type 2 Diabetes is the most common type of diabetes and it tends to run in families. It usually occurs later in life, but more children are getting it due to weight concerns and dietary habits. This is where the pancreas produces insulin, but the body is unable to convert it properly, so they become insulin resistant.
Type 3 Diabetes is an individual that supports and is impacted by the diabetic person. They are usually the person you live with that helps you out and helps you stay on track. They can usually sense when your blood sugar is off and can encourage you in those difficult moments. To me they are our life savers!
Gestational Diabetes Occurs when the Mother’s body is not able to make and use all the insulin it needs for pregnancy. According to the American Diabetes Association they are not sure what causes gestational diabetes. They say that it could be the placenta that supports the baby triggers hormones that can block the insulin in the mother’s body, which causes her to become insulin resistant.
